I was looking at my handbag collection the other day and I realized that most of my handbags are very ¡°safe¡±. There are typical shapes you would expect, typical colors, and typical materials. I can¡¯t say that my collection is boring, but the day I was looking at my bags I felt the need for some spice and pizazz amongst my bags. First, I¡¯d like to say that I¡¯m so incredibly happy that Chanel Haute Couture chose to do something more interesting for their show this season than they did for their show last season. Although, if you find silver and white boring, this may be another loser for you.

It was a winner for me, however. For the first time in his lengthy career, Karl Lagerfeld created a collection that completely eschewed black and navy ¨C in fact, it eschewed color of any sort, save for a few traditional Chanel suits with a culotte twist (I just dry heaved a little bit there), which were rendered in various pastels. The chanel collection was beautifully draped, beaded and rendered in the most unforgiving color palette you can imagine for the construction of clothing, but it all worked exactly as it should have. Of course it did; it¡¯s couture.

Well, we have seen it all. I have never quite understood the allure of a design house venturing into the foray of athletic equipment or other random accessories, but at least it gives us a talking point. We have seen a $17,000 Chanel Bicycle and a Chanel Segway and now we have Chanel temporary tattoos. Only they have decided to name it ¡®temporary skin art¡¯, as if that changes it all and makes the price tag seem less-ridiculous.

I don¡¯t always love what Chanel shows, but I almost always adore the great length to which Karl Lagerfeld goes to show it. Few people in fashion are capable of envisioning a great spectacle in the way that he does for his over-the-top presentations, and they¡¯re consistently a pleasure to watch, whether or not you enjoy the clothes.

Chanel¡¯s presentation at Paris Fashion Week involved the importation of giant chunks of an iceberg from from Scandinavia, and the models splashed down the runway in appropriate cold-weather attire. Well, it was as appropriate as Chanel gets ¨C there were several of what only can be accurately called Wookie suits, plus lots of other arctic attire in messy, frayed brown tweeds and faux fur (that¡¯s right, all the fur in this show was fake).

About a third of the way into the show, the clothing got a little more wearable and some of the bags got seriously pretty. My personal favorites were the icebox clutches ¨C although they may have not been the most practical bags shown (I think that award goes to the furry, tweedy backpacks), they were the ones that most accurately captured the frozen feeling of the collection and will probably make fantastic collector¡¯s items in the future. On the whole, ome of the bags were bizarre, but if you can get past the faux fur then there was some beauty to behold.

Finally. Someone at Gucci has thrown out a life preserver to save their Resort 2008 collection from complete irrelevancy, and that life preserver is the Sukey Large Python Tote. We¡¯ve spoken previously about the fake-tattoo-covered shortcomings of the 2008 group of bags, and they aren¡¯t pretty. The Python Sukey, however, is nothing short of gorgeous. The reason that it works so well is that the shape of the bag is extremely simple and the surface of the python skin is unmarred by exterior pockets, decorative doo-dads, and unnecessary seaming. The python skin itself takes center stage, and the beautiful combination of cream, tan, and brown scales make a perfect fall bag, even for a girl that isn¡¯t that enthusiastic about brown in any form. Bravo, Gucci. I knew you could do it. This bag is so beautifully simple that it almost makes me forget your past sins. Buy through Saks for $3,195.

It¡¯s a testament to a bag¡¯s inherent beauty and good design if the color it¡¯s featured in is baby puke brown and I still absolutely love it. I¡¯m opposed to all forms and iterations of brown and tan, but the Gucci G Wave Large Leather Tote is easily beautiful enough to shine through a color choice that I may not particularly care for (and that a lot of people may really like).

When Gucci gets something right, they get it right, and this bag is all kinds of right. The leather looks absolutely touchable and soft, but still thick and a bit rugged, which is perfect for Gucci¡¯s slightly exotic aesthetic. Not only that, but the bag looks utterly functional, and is probably not too showy to use as a work bag, as long as your office isn¡¯t particularly conservative.

But my favorite part of the entire design is the details. When details are bad, it can sink the whole bag (and, quite frankly, lessen my opinion of an entire brand), but the details on this one are so spot-on. I love the braided details, which appear to be an emerging trend across the handbag landscape, but obviously my favorite aspect is the crocodile trim. I wish more brands incorporated exotic accents into their designs ¨C it¡¯s a great way to add texture and visual variation to a bag, not to mention a note of luxury, with a relatively minimal expense (compared to making an entire exotic bag, of course). It seems as though I should have waited another week to write about leopard print as a bag trend ¨C since that post was published, several more enormous brands have made their entrance into the fad, most notable among them Gucci. I was surprised to see the Gucci Heritage Pony Hair Boston Bag at first, but once I had a chance to think about it, the print totally makes sense with the retro feel of their most recent collection.

As several commenters correctly pointed out on my initial leopard print post, animal prints have been around for ever and waxed and waned in relative trendiness for generations. It only makes sense that when most of fashion is taking a look back to find inspiration from over half a century ago that leopard print would experience a resurgence in popularity.

My collection is overflowing with great leather bags, but I not only wanted but felt that I needed to add some bags that are meant to be taken lightly and meant to be fun. I found it in the Marc Jacobs Fluorescent Tweed Bag and I have found it in this Gucci Bag.

You know who else is drawn to it? Elle MacPherson.

I must admit, I have had Elle MacPherson envy for years. She somehow pairs gorgeous with casual so well that it makes me mad. And in her all dark ensemble, Elle added a playful touch with the Gucci Joy Boston Bag with Snowman and Elephant Print.

All I have to say is I absolutely adore everything about the Chanel Classic Flap Bag in semi-matte alligator skin from the Paris Shanghai collection.

I have decided that Lady Gaga performs makeovers on her Hermes Birkins just for us. She wants the handbag lovers of the world to get a rise out of what she is doing to her bag. And how can you not? Her last Hermes Birkin was taken over by what looked like a Sharpie marker with a message to her Japanese fans.

This Birkin has been taken over with studs, and not just any studs, seemingly sharp studs. The kind of studs that can poke you and get an ¡°Ouch¡± reaction from your mouth. And when you inspect the bag closely, they are not perfectly set apart, rather tried to be somewhat in pattern but it is a bit of a free-form design.

What I wonder is if Lady Gaga sits in her spacious first class seat as she flies from location to location with a glue gun and a bag of studs working on her handbag-art-project. You know, with anyone else I would be shocked, but this is Lady Gaga. What else can you expect? Her outfits and her entire persona is there for shock value, so at least she is staying true to herself and making sure each and every item she wears gets the attention she is seeking. Oh yea, her shoes look like horse¡¯s hooves¡­ I¡¯m just saying.
